Dear Dr. Fabian Krahl,

The behaviour that you described would indeed be a bug, but I am unable to
reproduce it.
Steps that I took to try to reproduce the error:
1. Go to https://www.crystallography.net/cod/search.html
2. In the "1 to 8 elements" section type "Al" into one of the fields and
"O" into another field. The values in the search fields should not contain
the surrounding quotes.
3. Press the "Send" button.

Upon doing this I get a result page with 9858 entries, first of which is
"Al2 O3" (COD ID 1000017).

Could you please try to search again just to make sure this was not a
transient error? If the error still persists, could you please send some
additional information about your setup (web browser name and version
number, operating system name and version, etc.)?

Sincerely,
Antanas Vaitkus
